Murph: Quarantined

May 25th is fast approaching, and that means one thing: Murph. Each year gyms and individuals endur through the popular Hero workout to pay their respects to both Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy and the armed forces as a whole. Communities use the annual event to grow closer. Individuals use the long workout to test their mettle and gauge their fitness.

This year is different, though.

The entire world is dealing with the impact of COVID-19. Gyms are closed. Communities are on lockdown. People are hurting economically, mentally and physically. And while every major event in the world (Olympics, all major sports leagues, CrossFit Games, etc.) has rightfully been cancelled, Murph doesn’t have to be, nor should it be.

It was always about the individual.

Yes, we use Murph and other Hero workouts as community builders, but at their very core those workouts are about the individual. Murph, J.T., Michael, Randy, Nate and others like them push individuals to their physical and mental limits to remind us that, no matter how tough life seems in the moment, you can always overcome. They help teach us to be grateful for what we have, and ultimately that we can get through difficult situations.

A challenging workout can help us deal with the uncertainty and fear that currently consume our world and remind us of the resolve we have when things get tough.
