In the United States, chronic pain affects approximately 20.4% of adults, with 8% experiencing high-impact chronic pain, leading to significant reductions in quality of life and an economic burden estimated between $560 billion to $635 billion annually. Concurrently, the opioid crisis remains a critical public health issue, with over 70% of the 70,630 drug overdose deaths in 2019 involving opioids, highlighting the challenges in pain management and opioid use. Despite a decrease in opioid prescriptions from 255.2 million in 2012 to 153.3 million in 2019, the prevalence of synthetic opioids, primarily fentanyl, in overdose deaths underscores the ongoing struggle to balance effective pain management with the risks of opioid addiction and misuse. This situation is further complicated by the stigma surrounding chronic pain and opioid use, as well as the challenges healthcare providers face in treating pain effectively while mitigating the risk of addiction
