6 CrossFit Affiliates make up 40% of the SoCal Regional Teams

In the first stage of the CrossFit Games(The Open) 500+ CrossFit Affiliates in Southern California are allowed to make as many 8 person teams to compete to get to the second stage of the Games(The Regionals). After the Open is completed the top 30 teams are invited to the Regionals. At most, 6% of the 500+ affiliates can move on to Regionals. However, 6 affiliates, impressively, sent two teams, making up 40% of the 30 teams.

What’s going on?

There is a chance a lot of Affiliates chose not to participate in the Open. However, I think this is unlikely because the amount of people who sign up for the Open increases a lot every year. The second possibility is that a lot of affiliates suck, which I think is also untrue. CrossFit has been growing at a freakishly fast pace over the last few years, and, with that growth, a lot more affiliates have been created. The reality is these affiliates haven’t had a chance to train athletes for as long as some of the older affiliates and it makes sense that they wouldn’t have as competitive athletes. Also, many athletes who qualified as individual athletes choose to go team. Regardless, this is an impressive accomplishment. It’s also worth noting that CrossFit Invictus are not only sending two teams but a male and female athlete that both finished top 10 in the Open in Southern California.
